Children’s glasses have to survive playgrounds, school bags and being pulled off by the temple. Here is what to check, whether you are buying prescription eyeglasses or a first pair of sunglasses.
Fit first
- The frame should sit level and not slide when your child looks down — nose pads or a moulded nose bridge help on smaller faces.
- Temples should curve behind the ear without pressing; flexible spring hinges forgive rough handling.
- Eyes should sit in the centre of each lens — a frame that is too wide puts the optical centre in the wrong place.
Lens safety
Choose polycarbonate or Trivex lenses: they are impact-resistant, lighter than standard plastic and block UV. For sunglasses, look for 100% UV protection and a wraparound fit — the Burberry kids’ pieces in this season’s campaign are a good example of full coverage without a “sporty” look.
Getting them to wear it
Let your child pick the colour, keep a spare pair for school, and use a strap or case that clips to the bag. A frame they chose is a frame they will keep on.
